Iovate Health Sciences has responded by pulling 14 of their Hydroxycut products from the shelves. Iovate says that they had sold approximately 9 million units of the recalled products in 2008.
Hydroxycut products are dietary supplements sold in health food and department stores and pharmacies. They are marketed for weight loss, fat-burners, and low-carb diet aids as well as energy enhancers and for water loss according to the FDA.

While it appeared that removing Ephedra (Ma Huang) from fat burning supplements would make them safe - it turns out that many of the so termed "thermogenic enhancers" can also pose health risks. What's the Fuss about "Fat Burners" ?
You walk into a drugstore and you see rows upon rows of herbal remedies, fat burners, slimming teas, & other weight loss products. You open up a newspaper or magazine and advertisement are splashed across the page for the latest break-through pill which metabolises or binds fat! And you wonder if there is any truth in what these products are claiming and if you should try it. You are particularly tempted after the extra weight you gained over the festive season (which was a continouos celebration from Christmas to Valentine's & Easter). At least one of our readers did and asked the question "how effective are fat burner products & are there any side effects?"
Fat burner products contain a variety of ingredients ranging from fillers to fiber to what is claimed to be the key or active ingredient. I picked three of the most common ingredients found in these products to discuss.
Common Ingredients in "Fat Burners"
* L-carnitine
Function: L-Carnitine (or just carnitine) is an amino acid. It has a key role in the metabolism of fat; it transports fat into the cell to be oxidized or "burnt" to provide energy. Fat cannot penetrate the inner mitochondial membrane of the cell to be utilized unless it is paired to carnitine, thus carnitine has an important role in fat transport into cells.
Claim: Supplement companies marketing fat burners products that contain carnitine claim that since carnitine is necessary for fat metabolism, taking extra carnitine will help you burn more fat, leading to weight loss.
The Truth: Research has shown that extra carnitine does not enable more fat than usual to be burnt for energy. Even in athletes training hard, carnitine deficiency is rare. The body is very efficient in conserving carnitine, so taking more carnitine will not help burn more fat. Double-blind studies reveals that carnitine supplementation failed to get rid of the pudge. Subjects on low calorie diets undertaking exercise programs and supplementing with carnitine show no difference in fat or weight loss to those that did not use carnitine1,2,3.
Side-Effects: From the studies that I found, L-carnitine has not been linked with any toxicity. Our body makes carnitine from lysine & methionine, in conjunction with vitamin C, iron, niacin, and vitamin B6.

Function: Ephedra or Ma Huang has broncho-dilating and decongesting properties. The active ingredient, which is ephedrine, stimulate the central nervous system, dilate the bronchial tubes, elevate blood pressure, and increase heart rate. Pseudoephedrine (the synthetic form of ephedrine) is a popular over-the-counter remedy for relief of nasal congestion.
Claim: Since ephedra is a central nervous system stimulant, it is believed that ephedra, particularly when combined with caffeine, promotes weight loss by increasing heart rate and possibly metabolism.
The Truth: Many doctors discourage the use of ephedra as a weight-loss aid because of the many side effects that can occur with its use, especially since many of the side effects are intensified when ephedra is combined with caffeine.
Side-Effects: Ephedra or Ma Huang has amphetamine-like side effects, including elevated blood pressure, rapid heart beat, nervousness, irritability, headache, urination disturbances, vomiting, muscle disturbances, insomnia, dry mouth, heart palpitations, and even death due to heart failure4. It interacts with drugs such as MAO-inhibiting antidepressants, digitoxin, or guanethidine, thus you should consult a physician before taking Ephedra or Ma Huang. FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) have determined that products contain the combination of Ma Huang and kola nut, a source of caffeine, can cause severe injury to people even under conditions of usual or recommended use. Reported reactions range from serious, life-threatening conditions such as irregular heartbeat, heart attack, stroke, seizures, hepatitis and psychosis, to relatively minor and temporary conditions such as dizziness, headache and gastrointestinal distress.

Chitosan technically is not a "fat burner". It is touted more as a "fat trapper" or "fat absorber", but I have included it in this discussion as it has been in the news a lot & I've had many questions about it.
Function: Chitosan is a derivative of chitin (pronounced KI-tin), a substance found in the shells of insects, crabs, lobsters, and other crustaceans.
Claim: Sellers claim that chitosan causes weight loss by binding fats in the stomach and preventing them from being digested and absorbed. Some refer to it as a "fat magnet". It is added to diet pills because it is supposed to bind with fats in the digestive tract and filter them out before the body can absorb them.
The Truth: A study involving thirty-four overweight volunteers in a randomized placebo- controlled double-blind trial where subjects were given four capsules of chitosan/placebo for 28 consecutive days. Results suggest that chitosan in the administered dosage, without dietary alterations, does not reduce body weight in overweight subjects5.
Side-Effects: Since dietary fat is being excreted, you may have gastrointestinal side effects such as gas, bloating, diarrhea or fatty stools. More importantly, if chitosan really entraps a significant amount of fat, it would grab up all fats, including fat soluble vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids (a good fat), in trying to rid your body of the fats. Animal studies have show that chitin lowers vitamin E (a fat-soluble vitamin) levels in the body. It will also absorb medications that are encapsulated in fat-based compounds. These include some cholesterol-lowering drugs, as well as oral contraceptives and some forms of hormone-replacement therapy.
Buyer Beware

Caffeine
Seldom acknowledged on the labels of dietary supplements promoted for weight loss, caffeine is almost uniformly their key ingredient. So far, the agency has not identified which of the many ingredients in Hydroxycut products, or its dosage, may have caused dangerous side effects. The following are among weight-loss ingredients most frequently used in these formulas.
Caffeine
Seldom acknowledged on the labels of dietary supplements promoted for weight loss, caffeine is almost uniformly their key ingredient. Its sources are many and extremely varied: green tea extract (or Camellia sinensis), guarana, yerba mate and kola nut, to name a few. In studies, high doses of caffeine have been shown to decrease appetite, but the effect doesn't last long.
Antioxidants
Glutathione, green tea extracts and, more recently, the Brazilian açai berry are among the many sources of antioxidants marketed in supplements as an aid to weight loss. In test tubes, antioxidants called flavenoids and phenolic acids have been found to cut the production of triglycerides in mouse fat cells. But their weight-loss properties in humans haven't been rigorously tested.
Bitter orange
After the FDA banned the sale of ephedra and other products containing ephedrine in 2004, marketers of dietary supplements for weight loss widely proclaimed extracts from the peel of bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) "the next ephedra."
Bitter orange (also called Seville orange and sour orange) is touted as an energy-enhancing fat burner, as was ephedrine. There is evidence that, like ephedrine, it may cause slightly more weight loss than diet and exercise alone. And the active ingredients in bitter orange extract -- synephrine and octopamine -- are related to ephedrine.
Hydroxycitric acid
The ingredient from which the Hydroxycut name was originally drawn is a derivative of the Malabar tamarind, or Garcinia cambogia. Used in traditional medicine to treat high cholesterol, it is touted as an agent that interferes with fat metabolism and possibly suppresses appetite.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid
Frequently included in products that promise to help dieters transform fat into lean muscle mass, CLA is a polyunsaturated fat found naturally in milk and meat, and is derived from the oil of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) seeds. One product that touts its power -- Phosphacore -- says that Carthamus tinctorius "may work to safely break up and flush away unhealthy adipose [fat] cells."
Cortisol blockers
Tinctures of golden root (Rhodiola rosea) or other herbs, such as rose root, are marketed as weight-loss aids on the argument that stress -- which causes the release of the hormone cortisol -- can lead to weight gain and, particularly, to the accumulation of belly fat. There is no evidence that blocking cortisol causes weight loss, or that herbal remedies lower cortisol levels.
Chitosan
The chemically cleansed product of grinding up the shells of shrimps, crabs and lobsters, chitosan is a powder that has been used in the water-purification industry for years: Sprinkled on top of holding tanks, it binds to lipids, or fats. Fats and oils can thus be skimmed off easily. This has led to the claim that supplements containing chitosan have "fat magnet" qualities, absorbing dietary fat before it can be absorbed into the gut and flushing it away.
But three human clinical trials found no difference in weight or serum cholesterol levels between subjects taking chitosan supplements and those taking a placebo. Chitosan could be dangerous to anyone with shellfish allergies.

Hydroxycut is marketed as a fat burner and considered to be a low cost diet aid. It was recalled by the FDA due to liver injuries resulting from the drug, some leading to death. There were 14 different Hydroxycut products initially recalled by the FDA. They include the following:

One 19-year-old man reportedly died after using the product. There were 23 reports of liver damage and elevated liver enzymes due to this product. The death of the 19-year-old man, according to the FDA, occurred in 2007 but was not reported to the FDA until March, 2009.
According to the FDA, Hydroxycut contains herbal extracts as well as other ingredients. It has not yet been determined by the FDA which components of the product are causing the liver damage. In addition to liver damage suffered by some who used the product, other health problems have also been linked to Hydroxycut. They include kidney problems, muscle damage and cardiovascular problems.
The company that makes Hydroxycut stated on their website that millions of people have tried the products over the years but that they are voluntarily stopping sale of the products. A spokesman for the Council for Responsible Nutrition, which is an association for dietary supplementation, defended the products stating that it does not prove cause and effect. The FDA, however, has recalled the products and advised any consumers who are using the products to stop taking them immediately. No reports have been issued from the dietary agencies that support these products as of yet.
Those who are trying to lose weight are better off to use natural methods of achieving weight loss and weight control than by taking dangerous weight loss supplements which contain harmful ingredients. This has been proved time and time again as various weight loss supplements have been recalled by the FDA and deemed to be unsafe. Grass-fed beef or bison (NOT your typical grocery store beef!) - I know most people think that red meat is unhealthy for you, but that's because they don't understand how the health of the animal affects how healthy the meat is for consumption. Keep this in mind -- "an unhealthy animal provides unhealthy meat, but a healthy animal provides healthy meat".
Typical beef or bison that you see at the grocery store is raised on grains such as corn and soybeans. Soy and corn are NOT the natural diet of cattle or bison, and therefore changes the chemical balance of fats and other nutrients in the beef or bison. Grain-fed beef and bison is typically WAY too high in omega-6 fatty acids and WAY too low in omega-3 fatty acids.

grass-fed beef healthier than grain-fed beef
1. Grass-fed beef or bison (NOT your typical grocery store beef!) - I know most people think that red meat is unhealthy for you, but that's because they don't understand how the health of the animal affects how healthy the meat is for consumption. Keep this in mind -- "an unhealthy animal provides unhealthy meat, but a healthy animal provides healthy meat".
Typical beef or bison that you see at the grocery store is raised on grains such as corn and soybeans. Soy and corn are NOT the natural diet of cattle or bison, and therefore changes the chemical balance of fats and other nutrients in the beef or bison. Grain-fed beef and bison is typically WAY too high in omega-6 fatty acids and WAY too low in omega-3 fatty acids.
grass-fed steaks, healthy fat burning foodOn the other hand, grass-fed beef from cattle and buffalo (or bison) that were raised on the type of natural foods that they were meant to eat in nature (grass and other forage), have much higher levels of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and lower levels of inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids (that most people already eat way too much of) compared to grain fed beef or bison.
Grass fed meats also typically contain up to 3 times the Vitamin E as in grain fed meats.
Not only that, but grass-fed meat from healthy cattle or bison also contain a special healthy fat called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in MUCH higher levels than grain-fed meat. CLA has been proven in scientific studies in recent years to help in burning fat and building lean muscle (which can help you lose weight!). These benefits are on top of the fact that grass-fed meats are some of the highest quality proteins that you can possibly eat... and this also aids in burning fat and building lean muscle.

3. Whole Eggs, including the yolk (not just egg whites) - Most people know that eggs are one of the highest quality sources of protein. However, most people don't know that the egg yolks are the healthiest part of the egg... that's where almost all of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (such as lutein) are found in eggs.
Egg Yolks contain more than 90% of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, B6, folate, and B12, and panthothenic acid of the egg. In addition, the yolks contain ALL of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K in the egg, as well as ALL of the essential fatty acids. Also, the protein of whole eggs is more bio-available than egg whites alone due to a more balanced amino acid profile that the yolks help to build.
Just make sure to choose free-range organic eggs instead of normal grocery store eggs.
